Integrating event log management applications with www.eventid.net

Are you developing an event log management application and wish to integrate you reports with our online database? Now it is quite easy with the "EventID.Net Access License for Applications" product.

Here are the advantages of purchasing a license code:
- The hyperlinks to Microsoft Knowledge Base articles are enabled
- The hyperlinks for searches against Google newsgroups and web are enabled
- No banner ads (this way, you users will not be exposed to advertising from your competition)
- Guaranteed support for the event search syntax (which may change for anonymous searches)
- Additional benefits may be added in the future

1. Preparing you application to support the integration with www.eventid.net.

For each event you have to offer the ability to browse to www.eventid.net to query information about that event. The format is as follows:

http://www.eventid.net/display.asp?app=<application name>&code=<license code>&source=<event source>&eventid=<event id>

Here are the fields:
- Application name - The name of your application, a string no longer than 15 alphanumerical characters
- License code - The EventID.Net Access License purchased from us. If no license is purchased, use "0".
- Event source - The source of that specific event log message
- Event id - The id of that specific event log message

Here is an example on how to build the hyperlink for event id 1015 from source Perflib with no EventID.Net Access License, from an application called LogMaster:

http://www.eventid.net/display.asp?app=LogMaster&code=0&source=Perflib&eventid=1015

And here is the hyperlink with a license code (note, the code listed here is not a valid one):

http://www.eventid.net/display.asp?app=LogMaster&code=b4941f7b5dfbcse7d3a2e315fe92dfc1&source=Perflib&eventid=1015

As part of your application configuration interface you have to add a field for the optional EventID.Net Access License that the user may purchase independently.

2. The EventID.Net Access License purchase and configuration process

The user will connect to our shopping cart and complete the purchase of one or more licenses. During the purchase, the user will be required to provide a Licensee name (typically the name of the company or organization). Using this Licensee name we generate a license key and enable it on www.eventid.net for the period that was purchased (the license can be purchased for 1,2,3,4 or 5 years). The 32 characters-long license key is emailed (within a couple of hours) to the user and then he or she can enter it in the the event log management application configuration. Once the user enters the license key, the hyperlinks to www.eventid.net should include it as specified above.

The access to www.eventid.net premium features listed above will be granted for the purchased period.

If no license is purchased the access to www.eventid.net will provide the same benefits that are offered by accessing www.eventid.net anonymously.

3. Licensing
A license has to be purchased for each computer running the part of the application that provides the users with the ability to link to www.eventid.net. Some applications have a collecting engine running on one computer and a reporting module running on another. In this case only the reporting station requires a license. If there are several reporting stations, then each would require a license, regardless of the number of users or servers that are monitored.

The license does not provide you the option to resell or otherwise market the enhanced access to EventID.Net to your customers through your web site. If you sell an application, the same licensing conditions apply as described below.

If the application runs on the administrators' desktops then a license would be required for each administrator.

Here are some examples:

Company "Acme Ltd." purchased LogMaster Console*, for their 3 Senior Network Administrators. This application runs on their computer and they monitor the servers that each of them are taking care of (approx. 10 servers each). In this case, 3 EventID.Net Access Licenses are required.

Company "Best Mouse Trap Inc." purchased LogMaster Server*, an event log collector application that collects events and syslog messages from 60 servers and sends them to a MS SQL database. LogMaster has the Collector engine running on the MS SQL server and an Analysis engine running on a computer that is dedicated to network monitoring . The Analysis engine provides a reporting interface that is used by 4 network administrators. In this case only 1 license is required. After a while, the company decides to purchase the web interface module for LogMaster that provides the users the ability to access the reporting interface from their desktops through a browser. All 4 administrators will access the web-based interface. In this case, 4 additional licenses have to be purchased.

If the users have a valid subscription to www.eventid.net it is not necessary to purchase an EventID.Net Access License as they already have all the benefits that a license code would bring.

* LogMaster Console and LogMaster Server are just fictitious products. Any similarity with a real product is just a coincidence.
