- Error message: Password authentication failed - It is possible that the username and password are incorrect for the McAfee VirusScan 8 Console Scheduled task. Look in all its tasks for a Scheduler and alter its username and password to a valid account on that computer.

Go to “C:\Program Files\Network Associates\VirusScan\MID”; see if you have a “vsecfg.cab” file. Rename the file to “vsecfg.cab.old” and see if this fixes the problem.
In my case this error appeared after an upgrade of Windows 2000 server to Windows 2003 server. The solution was to remove VSE8i and install VSE7.1.
