To check whether Exchange-aware AV is enabled, check the key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\MSExchangeIS\VirusScan. If the "Enabled" value is set to 1, then Exchange-aware AV is enabled. Please contact the AV vendor for an engine update. This has resolved multiple related cases.
