From a newsgroup post: "SP4 provides an SFM fix where the Macintosh Volume's desktop database is rebuilt every time after a restart. Depending on your volume/partition size, it could take some time for the volumes to reappear in the chooser, so be patient. If the volumes disappear periodically, the volume desktop is being clobbered and you will have to track down the source of the problem".
