After a failed attempt to install patch ME948109 on a SharePoint 3.0 server, all SharePoint database access ceased.  In the process of the failed patch the log on account for the MSSQL$SHAREPOINT service was altered. The fix in my case was to open the services management console, open the MSSQL$SHAREPOINT service properties window, select the Log on tab, set the account to local system or an administrative level account and restart the service.
