MSExchangeDS (278) Online defragmentation of database 'C:\exchsrvr\DSADATA\dir.edb' terminated prematurely after encountering unexpected error <Jet database error number>.

ME271987 provides an overview of Exchange Server database architecture and Database Engine (it is using the JET Database Engine).
- Error: -1018 = JET_errReadVerifyFailure - See ME188646.
- Error: -1605 = Jet_errKeyDuplicate - From a newsgroup post: "One of tables in Private IS database somehow got two identical values in index where values should be unique. SP4 by itself will not cure the problem. You (using ESEUTIL) have to remove offending record from the table or you can move all mailboxes to other server and delete the database, logs and checkpoint file (after confirming consistency of a good database). If you want to try it, make offline backup of MDBDATA directory on all volumes, note "priv.edb" size and run ESEUTIL in defrag mode first. If it fails, run it in repair mode. If it fails, go with moving mailboxes to other server. If it completes, note "priv.edb" size once again and see how much lost". See ME190918 for more details.
Errors specific to Jet databases (used by Exchange):
-1018 (JET_errReadVerifyFailure) The data read from disk is not the same as the data that was written to disk.
-1022 (JET_errDiskIO) The hardware, device driver, or operating system is returning errors.
-510 JET_errLogWriteFail The log files are out of disk space or there is a hardware failure with the log file disk.
