Error code 0x809706ba - In our case, this was recorded on a Windows 7, 64 bit computer. The same event was recorded several times, one for each pst file. However, after that there was no further problems so quite possible this was a transient condition. Outlook seems to work quite fine.
Some users considered EV100407 (Windows Search Service Terminated Unexpectedly) helpful for troubleshooting this issue.
If the indexing of the pst files is not working, one can try to rebuild it as described in EV100408 (Fixing Instant Search).
I encountered this problem on a laptop running Vista that was getting mail using RPC over https into an ost file. It never wanted to complete indexing of outlook items and this became annoying. I checked the event log and saw the 36 warning. It turned out that indexing was not enabled for OST files. The solution was to go to Control Panel -> Indexing properties -> click the Advanced button and enable OST in the file types list.
