Look at the “\Program Files\Network Associates\NetShield 2000\Temp” directory and see what it contains. Mine had 999 subfolders when I started receiving this error. I removed the subfolders and AutoUpdate started working correctly.
McAfee antivirus will try to use the configured TEMP directory in order to unzip the updated pattern files. This directory is identified by the TEMP environment variable. Verify (using the SET command) that the configured location is accessible to the antivirus engine.
