What is a parity error?
Make sure you have the proper master/slave settings on your drives. I was plagued by the same intermittent error for a while until I discovered that both DVD drives in my system were set as slave. Properly setting one as the master and the other as slave fixed the problem.
If possible upgrade the firmware for the controller (check with the motherboard manufacturer).
