Your computer could not be joined to the domain because the following error has occurred: the directory service was unable to allocate a relative identifier.
In our case the DNS suffix of our Windows 2000 SP server had been already set to the local domain name. Clearing this suffix but leaving the check mark to change the primary suffix when domain membership changes allowed us to join the domain.
