In our case, the internet connection went down. When it came back up, I opened Outlook 2003 (E2K server) and I was not getting any new email. Interestingly, OWA worked fine and had all my new emails. From experience, I have seen these oddities when messing around with the "Cached Exchange Mode". I disabled it and now Outlook works normally and no more error. I have had problems with this mode on E2K and I am getting the impression that Outlook 2003 prefers Exchange 2003. Anyways, that is how I fixed the problem. I am not going to dig deeper because I have seen this issue before with that mode and simply turning it off makes a big difference.
